RETRACTABLE LEASHES
Dog Training Tool: Retractable LeashesRating: Unacceptable due to potential for mis-use, abuse and/or malfunction in the hands of the average handler and for high risk of accident, injury and/or death.
Note: Allows for very little control over the dog's movements and encountering stimuli in the environment. High risk of entanglement, breakage and/or escape. A wide variety of injuries including death have been reported to both the dog on the retractable leash, its handler and other animals and/or people in the facinity. Operant Sequence: Positive Punishment or Negative Reinforcement Positive Punishment • When locked down, adding a pop-release correction to decrease the likelihood that the behaviour will be repeated. For example, adding a pop-release correction with the leash to stop the dog from pulling. Negative Reinforcement • Stopping the pop-release correction to increase the likelihood that the behaviour will be repeated. For example, ending the pop-release correction to keep the dog in heel position. (avoidance conditioning) Conclusion: Not advisable for use under any conditions. Download Full Research Findings Below
